Scripture: Jeremiah 23:6 (GN) – “When he is king, the people…will live in peace.”

What it means

Jeremiah’s prophecy concerns the coming of Jesus, the “branch of David.”  A key word in this prophecy is when.  Note that the scripture doesn’t use if.  That this “branch of David” would be king was a foregone conclusion to Jeremiah.  But what kind of king? Jesus referred to His kingdom as spiritual, not political.  His kingdom is to be in our hearts, minds, attitudes and actions.  When the time comes that Jesus is the focus of our lives, we will live in peace.

Does this mean that when we accept Jesus as ruler of our lives our troubles are over? Au Contraire – listen to what Jesus Himself had to say on that topic: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world, you will have trouble.  But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).  Jesus experienced troubles and heartache and knew that we would too.  The key is that despite our trouble, when we are in Christ, we experience Christ’s peace.

What it means to me

Are you troubled or afraid this summer for any reason? Jesus promised His followers “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

Love you guys, talk to you on Thursday!

In Christ,

Brian
