Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (ASV) – “But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.”

What it means

This is towards the end of the apostle Paul’s first letter to the church at Thessalonica, and specifically points to having respect for those in authority, or leadership positions.  We could look at this broadly to include leaders of all kinds, but I think Paul is focusing on those in leadership positions within the church.  There are many who are in positions of leadership within the church – pastors, administrators, and within the UMC, there are District Superintendents (my boss), and Bishops (their boss).  We are to treat them with ultimate respect – they have been specifically called by God and have been faithful in answering that call.

What it means to me

Guys, don’t misunderstand, I’m not trying to toot my own horn here.  I’m a part-time bi-vocational pastor, so not exactly towards the top of the leadership within the UMC.  But, I have been called by God to minister to you guys, and I take that calling very seriously, and with the utmost respect. Do I always get it right? Nope, afraid not.  You all know that, and yet you still offer much grace as I do my best to lead you into the presence of God each Sunday.  However, it takes an army – I know this is a team effort, so I am grateful for people like Beverly, Tammy and the choir who set the tone for worship through music.  I am also thankful for Kim Henry and David Marks, who help to keep our church building clean and functional, even though they are more behind the scenes, their work is just as important as mine.  And each one of you – you’re part of this ministry as well.  If you just spend a few minutes each week praying for our church, then you’re an invaluable leader.  Don’t underestimate that calling – please continue to pray for us as we seek to continue to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Love you guys, see you Sunday!

In Christ,

Brian
