Scripture: Hebrews 5:7 – “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.”

What it means

In the book of Hebrews, the writer paints a vivid portrait of Jesus’ humanity, as seen in the scripture above.  Another translation has “In the days of His flesh…”, but picture it.  Jesus, fully God and fully human in the flesh, intimately connected with human emotion and experience.  He wasn’t some distant deity that was untouched by the struggles of human existence while on earth.  He lived it.  He experienced the deepest joys and sorrows of life – the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.  Maybe today, you find yourself in the depths of sadness or in the middle of a difficult trial.  Remember, Jesus has been there too.  In the words of the TV commercial, “He gets us.”  The write of Hebrews wrote this to remind us that Christ wept back then much in the same way that we do today, and to also remind us that we are never, never alone in our pain, sorrow and suffering.

What it means to me

Our Savior, who walked the same path that you and I are currently on, yet was without sin, stands ready to carry our burdens.  Today, what if we allowed God to hear our raw emotions, doubts, and fears that we’ve been carrying for so long? What if we bore it all before our Father? Let’s allow Jesus to handle this for us – after all, He knows what we’re going through.  He gets us.

Love you guys, see you on Sunday!

In Christ,

Brian
