Scripture: John 8:12 – “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

What it means

Sounds pretty straightforward, doesn’t it? Just follow the light – it won’t lead you down any wrong paths…but only if that light is Jesus Himself, the light of the world. This is right after Jesus had forgiven a woman caught in the act of sin, right in front of those meddling Pharisees, so He was already in it pretty deep, and then He has the audacity to call Himself “the light of the world.” Immediately after Jesus utters this statement, they try to call Him on it, claiming that His testimony isn’t valid…not sure what they were looking for, but in any event, Jesus goes on to inform them that, basically, “You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

What it means to me

I guess it makes sense that if we’re going to choose to follow someone, we should know who we are choosing to follow. We should know their makeup, their character…and what they ultimately stand for and represent.Jesus stood for His Father, every time. Jesus loved His Father with every ounce of who He was, and as such, that made Him “The light of the world.” Sometimes things, or people, may appear to have a brightness about them that makes us want to follow them, but be careful…get to know them. I really encourage you, if you don’t already know Him, get to know Jesus. His light is worth following, always. “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

Love you guys, see you on Sunday!

In Christ,

Brian
