Scripture: Luke 10:38-42 – “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.  She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.  But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”  “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed - indeed only one.  Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

What it means

Remember this story? Imagine the pressure of having to make preparations for The Savior of the world, and your partner who’s supposed to be helping you is nowhere to be found.  It’s all on you – the food, the wine, the table preparations…and where is Mary? At the feet of The Master, intently listening and hanging on every word from Jesus.  Can’t say as I blame her, but put yourself in Martha’s shoes.  And yes, it gets to her, and she ends up having a meltdown right in front of Jesus.  What a conundrum…

What it means to me

So what’s Jesus’ message to Martha? Sounds like the Brady Bunch (Marsha Marsha Marsha, only Martha Martha Martha) 😊 “Don’t worry so much, it will be okay.”  We’ve spoken in church about the importance of not just settling for good, but always striving for the best, and giving God our best.  I’m sure Jesus would have been most appreciative of a delicious meal and a lovely table setting…but that wasn’t the best.  “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Let’s keep opting for that which is better…and it won’t be taken away from us either.  I promise.

Love you guys, see you on Sunday!

In Christ,

 Brian
