Devotional for June 11, 2024

Scripture: Hebrews 4:14-16 – “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

What it means

The title of this passage of scripture is “Jesus the High Priest”…and He is! There’s a lot to consider in these 3 verses of scripture, but Paul is assuring us that this Jesus that we worship as our Lord and Savior is indeed a high priest.  It sounds impressive, but the very next verse, he puts Jesus’ humanity on display as he assures us “Hey, Jesus is the high priest, but He is also just like you and me.”  Jesus was on this earth for around 33 years and experienced everything during His lifetime that you and I have, with the exception of sin.  And as such, we should have every confidence that God’s throne of grace is always open to you and I – 24/7.  Whenever we are in need of anything, the creator of the universe is available – just give him a shout!

What it means to me

One of our former associate pastors used to share how he viewed his quiet time as an opportunity to crawl up in the lap of his heavenly daddy and just spend some quality time with him.  It was very intimate and personal – exactly how it should be.  Is Jesus the high priest? Yes indeed – but He is also daddy…He can handle both, and wants to spend time with us.  Whether we find ourselves in a crisis or not, the throne room is always open.  There is always an opening in God’s schedule for us – His calendar has our name written all over it, so let’s take advantage of a Savior that happens to love us very, very much.

Love you guys, take care and we’ll talk to you one final time on Thursday!

In Christ,

Brian
