Devotional for June 4, 2024

 

Scripture: Lamentations 3:21-23 – “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:  Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

 

What it means

Isn’t this a cool scripture? This was written by the prophet Jeremiah around 586 BC, and much of the book isn’t particularly cheerful.  It focuses primarily on the fall of Jerusalem, and you can just feel the utter grief that Jeremiah shares in this book.  He had seen the selfishness of the people of Jerusalem, and knew that it would result in much suffering for them.  And yet…in the midst of that sad truth, he reveals that he still has hope! We have spoken a lot about hope at church, and how important that it is for us to have hope, even if we have nothing else.  Look at verse 22 – even though the people are suffering greatly, they are not consumed by it – simply because of the LORD’s great love for each one of us (note LORD in all caps in this passage).  The Lord is just, and has to judge the people justly, but in spite of that, He still has tremendous compassion for us – and they never fail.

What it means to me

I love how this wraps up in verse 23 – The LORD’s compassions are new, and not just new on the odd occasion, but new every morning…or constantly, in other words.  And yes – that holds true for you and I today.  God was faithful back then, and He continues to be faithful today in 2024.  So if you find yourself beaten down for whatever reason, take heart – God’s compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is His faithfulness.  Can I please have an Amen?
